Understanding the Efficacy of Penis Extenders

In November 2011, the Journal of Sexual Medicine published a paper that concluded penis extender traction devices (Penile Traction Therapy – PTT) can effectively lengthen the penis in both flaccid and erect states. You may view a copy of the research paper here. The study involved 23 participants with an average age of 30 years. They had length and girth measurements taken before and after the study. All of the participants complained about “short penis”. They were instructed to wear the device for 4 hours per day. When the trial finished, all participants saw length gains, and the researchers concluded, “Our findings supported the efficacy of the device in increasing penile length”.

A similar but more recent article was published in the American Journal of Urology, where they also studied the effects of PTT. The article was published in August 2021 and can be viewed here. There were 82 men in this trial, with an average age of 58. This study also looked at Peyronie’s Disease and whether PTT effectively treated this condition. After the six-month trial concluded, the 25 control patients reported multiple improvements, including increased length, reduction in curvature, improved erectile function, higher intercourse satisfaction and better overall sexual satisfaction. The clinic reported side effects were only mild and transient, and 87% would choose to repeat the therapy. 93% of the participants said they would recommend the treatment to others.

Peyronie’s disease is a condition where the penile shaft exhibits a bend during an erection. It may also be accompanied by pain, making intercourse difficult and, in many cases, impossible. Many men find the condition embarrassing and are reluctant to talk to their general practitioner about it. In February 2023, an article was published in the American National Library of Medicine looking at non-surgical ways to treat Peyronie’s disease, and PTT was mentioned. The first group of 41 patients were to use PTT, and the second group was to receive no treatment over 6 months. Of the 41 patients who used PTT, there was “a significant improvement in the mean curvature” after the trial concluded. It was also observed the amount of curvature correction was directly proportional to the amount of usage. So, patients who used the device for 6 hours per day saw more considerable improvements than those who used it for only 4 hours. It was also noted that in the 41 patients who used PTT, there was a significant increase in penile length. In comparison, no changes were noticed in the baseline group of men.
